Seeking a skilled COBOL developer to join our team for a subcontracting role. This position focuses on critical mainframe application development and conversion projects, specifically addressing field length changes during D0 to F6 conversions. Your expertise will be vital in ensuring data integrity and smooth system operations.
As a COBOL developer, you will be responsible for developing and maintaining mainframe applications. Key tasks include performing impact analysis, remediating code, and resolving issues in complex systems. A significant part of this role involves handling field length changes in legacy systems during format conversions, analyzing copybook and file layout modifications, and updating COBOL PIC definitions.
You will also manage field length dependencies across COBOL data definitions, database columns, and file records. Addressing numeric versus alphanumeric field conversions, managing leading/trailing spaces, and resolving data truncation or buffer overrun issues due to field size changes are also core responsibilities. Performing impact analysis for these changes across interfaces and systems is crucial.
The ideal candidate possesses strong hands-on experience with COBOL development, coupled with a solid understanding of JCL, batch processing, and job scheduling. Familiarity with VSAM, flat files, Oracle DB, or other relational databases is essential. Proficiency in mainframe utilities (e.g., SORT, IDCAMS, IEBGENER) and a strong grasp of file layouts and copybooks are required.
Specific experience with handling field length changes in legacy mainframe systems during format conversions is highly valued. This includes expertise in analyzing copybook and file layout changes, updating COBOL PIC definitions, and managing field length dependencies. The ability to resolve issues like buffer overruns, data truncation, and record mismatches stemming from field length changes is also a key requirement.
