Join Google Cloud's innovative team and shape the future of distributed cloud infrastructure. As a Staff Software Engineer, you'll be at the forefront of developing cutting-edge technologies that power global connectivity, exploration, and interaction. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to critical projects within Google Cloud, with the flexibility to explore diverse teams and challenges as the business evolves.
We are seeking versatile engineers with leadership potential and a passion for tackling complex full-stack problems. You will anticipate customer needs and drive innovation, acting as an owner of your work. Your contributions will be vital to extending Google Cloud's infrastructure, edge compute, and AI capabilities to diverse customer environments.
Our team is responsible for the end-to-end software enablement and hardware qualification lifecycle for server architectures within Google Distributed Cloud. This includes driving hardware onboarding for high-density AI clusters, enterprise fleets, and tactical edge deployments. You will play a key role in bridging the gap between physical server components and our distributed cloud control planes, architecting robust bare-metal turnup, firmware ingestion, and security pipelines.
Architect and govern the qualification of server platforms, GPUs, accelerators, high-speed NICs, and storage across various Google Distributed Cloud environments. Develop and refine bare-metal bootstrap workflows, including the GDC Bootstrapper Live OS and pre-turnup automation.
Build decoupled firmware delivery and validation engines for essential hardware components like BIOS, BMC, and GPU VBIOS, leveraging attestation for enhanced security and reliability. Manage node storage effectively, incorporating NVMe namespaces and Self-Encrypting Drives.
Collaborate closely with security and operating system teams to implement stringent hardware security controls, such as UEFI Secure Boot, LinuxBoot, TPM 2.0 measurements, and advanced pre-boot containment strategies.
A Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience is required, alongside a minimum of 8 years of hands-on programming experience in C++. You should possess at least 5 years of experience in testing and launching software products, with 3 years focused on technical architecture leadership, cross-team roadmap development, and engineering team guidance as a Tech Lead or Staff Software Engineer.
Demonstrated experience managing enterprise hardware through protocols like DMTF Redfish REST APIs, IPMI, or OEM out-of-band interfaces is essential. Expertise in systems-level software development, bare-metal server bring-up, OS provisioning, or device drivers is crucial. Familiarity with platform security concepts, including TPM 2.0 PCRs, UEFI Secure Boot, attestation, and cryptographic storage, is also required.
