Design, build, and maintain robust, scalable, high-performance systems powering critical Rippling products. Own and resolve complex, high-impact engineering problems from conception through production. Write production code, conduct code reviews, debug intricate issues, and make key implementation decisions. Define technical designs, balancing scalability, performance, reliability, security, and maintainability. Lead large engineering initiatives across multiple systems and teams. Develop reusable platforms, APIs, and infrastructure. Ensure system resiliency, observability, and operational excellence. Collaborate closely with Product Managers to understand customer needs and influence product and technical roadmaps. Enhance engineering practices through reviews, standards, and guidance. Mentor engineers, fostering growth in system design, technical judgment, and execution. Proactively identify and mitigate architectural bottlenecks and technical risks.
A minimum of 12 years of software engineering experience, with a proven track record in building and operating large-scale production systems. Possess strong hands-on programming skills and a passion for coding, debugging, and design. Proficiency in at least one of the following languages: Python, Go, Java, C++, Scala, Kotlin, or C#. Demonstrate a deep understanding of distributed systems and scalable system design principles. Exhibit strong fundamentals in APIs, data modeling, databases, concurrency, performance, caching, reliability, and production operations. Experience designing systems that handle substantial scale, traffic, data volume, or complex business workflows. Possess a thorough understanding of system resiliency, SLAs/SLOs, observability, monitoring, and operational excellence. Skilled in designing clean, evolving APIs, services, and abstractions. Capable of navigating ambiguity, prioritizing technical challenges, and driving them independently. Proven ability to lead complex technical initiatives without formal authority. Strong product intuition and the ability to align technical decisions with business outcomes. Experience mentoring engineers and elevating team technical capabilities. Excellent written and verbal communication skills for clearly articulating complex technical concepts.
