Amazon's Payroll Tax & Accounting Technology team is seeking a Senior Software Development Engineer to build and innovate a high-performance, globally scalable gross-to-net payroll calculation engine. This role focuses on deep tax calculation capabilities and leverages AWS cloud services for scalability. If you're passionate about accurate financial calculations impacting employees and thrive in complex, fast-paced regulatory environments, this opportunity is for you.
You will drive innovation in distributed, scalable gross-to-net calculation infrastructure with sophisticated tax processing at its core. The role involves developing a single global system that processes gross earnings through complex multi-jurisdiction tax calculations to net pay for millions of employees, utilizing a "policy as code" approach with LLM-based rule extraction.
Lead the architecture and technical design for a globally deployed, locally configured gross-to-net calculation engine. Drive technical decisions for LLM-based rule extraction pipelines and establish patterns for converting regulatory documents into executable "policy as code".
Design and develop deterministic tax calculation algorithms for employee withholding, employer tax obligations, and net pay calculations across multiple countries. Create accounting integration services for GL and journal entries, and implement GenAI shadow mode validation frameworks.
Mentor engineers, establish engineering best practices, and partner with SDEs, Program Managers, tax specialists, and payroll operations to build and deploy software solutions.
This position requires 5+ years of professional software development experience, including 5+ years of programming experience and 5+ years of leading the design or architecture of new and existing systems. A Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent is essential.
Experience as a mentor, tech lead, or leading an engineering team is also required. Preferred qualifications include 8+ years of full software development lifecycle experience, a Master's degree in computer science or equivalent, and experience building complex, customer-delivered software systems.
Additional preferred experience includes LLM development on AI acceleration hardware, or expertise in machine learning, data mining, natural language processing, tax, or finance. Experience designing and implementing financial controls or audits is also beneficial.
