Join Optum, a global leader in healthcare innovation, and contribute to a mission that improves lives through advanced technology. We are looking for a dynamic Software Engineering Lead to spearhead the design, development, deployment, and support of robust, scalable, and secure cloud-native applications and backend services. This role offers a unique blend of technical leadership and end-to-end product delivery within complex, regulated business environments. You will be instrumental in building high-performance APIs, microservices, sophisticated document-processing workflows, and efficient data-transformation pipelines.
As a key player, you will architect and implement production-grade software solutions tailored for intricate business processes, including those in healthcare and other regulated sectors. Your work will directly impact health optimization on a global scale, fostering a culture of inclusion and continuous growth alongside talented peers.
As a Technical Lead, you will own and drive complex technical initiatives with minimal supervision, significantly influencing architecture beyond immediate project scope. You will proactively identify and address risks, scalability concerns, and long-term design trade-offs.
Key responsibilities include: - Architecting, designing, developing, and delivering scalable, secure, and maintainable backend platforms, APIs, and microservices. - Building production-quality Python applications utilizing frameworks like FastAPI or Flask. - Managing the full software lifecycle: design, development, testing, deployment, monitoring, performance tuning, troubleshooting, and production support. - Developing intricate workflows for document ingestion, PDF processing, data extraction, normalization, and business-rule-based transformations. - Designing and implementing integrations with cloud services for compute, storage, databases, messaging, security, monitoring, and analytics. - Applying engineering best practices, including automated testing, code reviews, secure coding, observability, and structured logging. - Collaborating across product, architecture, security, DevOps, and business teams to deliver compliant and maintainable solutions. - Mentoring junior engineers through design and code reviews, and facilitating knowledge sharing. - Leveraging modern AI-assisted development practices to enhance requirements analysis, coding, testing, and debugging.
We require a B.Tech or M.Tech (or equivalent) in Computer Science Engineering or a related field, coupled with a minimum of 5 years of professional software engineering experience. Essential expertise includes developing and supporting scalable backend applications, APIs, microservices, or cloud-native platforms. Candidates must possess solid hands-on experience with backend frameworks such as FastAPI or Flask, and demonstrate proven experience with asynchronous programming, concurrency, and event-driven application design.
Demonstrated experience in designing and developing large backend systems and RESTful APIs is crucial. Extensive hands-on experience with at least one major cloud platform (GCP, AWS, Azure) is mandatory. Familiarity with PDF processing, document understanding, table extraction, OCR, or multimodal document workflows is highly desirable.
Furthermore, experience with LLMs, prompt engineering, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), or AI-assisted process automation is advantageous. Proficiency in deploying, operating, monitoring, and supporting production-grade cloud applications is expected. Candidates should have proven experience with SQL and NoSQL databases, data modeling, and performance tuning, alongside experience with automated testing using tools like pytest.
A working knowledge of Kubernetes or similar container orchestration platforms, along with a solid understanding of cloud architecture, networking, IAM, security, and high availability, is required. Expert-level proficiency in Python, writing modular and maintainable code, is essential. Strong communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and technical documentation skills are also critical for success in this role.
