Job description

Mastercard is a global leader in payments, empowering economies and individuals in over 200 countries. We are dedicated to building a sustainable economy where everyone can thrive by providing secure, simple, and smart digital payment solutions. Our advanced technology, strategic partnerships, and extensive networks enable us to offer unique products and services that help people, businesses, and governments reach their full potential.

As a Software Engineer II on the Transaction Stream team, you will play a crucial role in delivering cutting-edge Core Payment capabilities. We utilize modern digital architecture, cloud-native principles, event-driven technologies, and Scaled Agile frameworks to build our solutions. This role involves contributing to the delivery and quality of payment-processing capabilities within highly integrated systems, leveraging your expertise in payments domain knowledge and technical skills to analyze business requirements, transaction flows, and ensure seamless system integration.

Responsibilities

Contribute to the design, delivery, validation, and quality assurance of Transaction Stream and Mastercard payment-processing capabilities. Apply deep functional and technical domain knowledge to comprehend requirements, solution designs, transaction flows, and expected system behavior. Translate business and technical requirements into comprehensive end-to-end functional scenarios, integration scenarios, expected outcomes, and thorough validation coverage. Conduct hands-on functional and end-to-end integration validation across interconnected systems, applications, APIs, services, and payment-processing platforms. Analyze intricate payment transaction flows, including authorization, advice, reversal, clearing, and related payment-processing lifecycle scenarios. Validate system behavior across upstream and downstream components to guarantee solutions function flawlessly across integration boundaries. Investigate ISO payment messages, application logs, system responses, APIs/interfaces, and data flows to troubleshoot functional and integration issues effectively. Identify software defects, functional gaps, integration issues, dependencies, and potential customer impact through meticulous analysis of system interactions and transaction behavior. Collaborate closely with Software Engineering, Product, Business, Architecture, and dependent application teams to investigate and resolve issues.

Support defect investigation and root-cause analysis by tracing transactions across multiple applications and pinpointing the component or integration point associated with unexpected behavior. Contribute to the development of automation, utilities, frameworks, and self-service tooling to enhance validation coverage, repeatability, efficiency, and overall engineering productivity. Participate actively in requirement walkthroughs, solution and design reviews, code/implementation discussions, and release-readiness activities, offering a holistic end-to-end payments and integration perspective. Analyze production issues and customer-reported scenarios to reproduce problems, identify gaps, and contribute to improvements in application quality and resilience. Support the continuous enhancement of engineering practices, integration coverage, observability, troubleshooting approaches, and overall software quality. Foster effective collaboration with globally distributed Engineering, Product, Architecture, Business, and dependent technology teams within an Agile delivery environment.

Qualifications

A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience is required. Candidates should possess experience working with complex transactional platforms, payment-processing systems, or highly integrated enterprise applications.

Strong knowledge of the cards and payments domain is essential, including transaction lifecycle, message flows, processing rules, and system interactions. Hands-on experience with authorization, advice, reversal, clearing, and related payment-processing flows is crucial. A working knowledge of payment messaging standards such as ISO 8583 and ISO 20022 is expected.

Demonstrate strong experience in functional, system, and end-to-end integration validation across distributed applications and interconnected systems. The ability to translate business and technical requirements into functional scenarios, transaction flows, integration scenarios, expected outcomes, and validation coverage is key. Possess strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with the capacity to investigate complex issues across multiple applications, services, and integration points.

Proficiency in analyzing transaction messages, application logs, APIs/interfaces, system responses, and data to understand application behavior and isolate issues. Familiarity with payment simulation or transaction-generation tools like T3 or equivalents is beneficial. A good understanding of modern software architecture, including microservices, APIs, cloud platforms, event-driven architecture, caching, and persistence technologies, is required. Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, source-control practices, automated validation, and modern software delivery processes is also necessary.

Working knowledge of Java, Spring Boot, APIs, SQL, scripting, or similar technologies is needed to support application analysis, troubleshooting, automation, and integration validation. Experience developing or contributing to automation, utilities, test harnesses, API-based validation, or engineering tools that enhance quality and delivery efficiency is preferred. Understanding of software engineering principles, including debugging, defect analysis, root-cause analysis, maintainability, reliability, and observability, is important. Strong communication and collaboration skills are vital for working effectively across Engineering, Product, Business, Architecture, and dependent technology teams. Comfort and adaptability in an Agile software delivery environment are expected.
