Amazon is seeking a skilled Software Development Manager to lead an engineering team within the Center of Excellence for Orchestration (ORCA). This role is pivotal in shaping the future of Amazon's premier multi-tenant orchestration platform, essential for mission-critical business workflows across the company's vast ecosystem.
ORCA, powered by HERD, is the core engine for implementing complex business processes through workflow automation. As a tier-1 service, it ensures operational excellence with automatic scaling, throttling, and retry mechanisms, capable of handling peak loads without disruption. The platform abstracts orchestration complexities, allowing developers to focus on designing business workflows. It supports various execution models, including synchronous, asynchronous, time-based, and event-driven triggers, with seamless integration into AWS services and SDO solutions.
Drive technical excellence by defining roadmaps and ensuring the platform's operational reliability. Your team will be responsible for building robust, scalable solutions that guarantee high availability for Amazon's most critical business operations. Collaboration will be key, working closely with product management, architecture teams, and business stakeholders to maintain a sharp focus on engineering excellence and operational dependability.
Key responsibilities include leading the definition and development of multi-tier web services, applying a deep understanding of engineering practices across the full software development lifecycle. This encompasses coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations. You will also partner effectively with product or program management teams and be involved in designing and architecting new and existing systems, focusing on reliability and scaling.
A minimum of 3 years of experience in engineering team management is required, complemented by 7 years of overall engineering experience. Additionally, 8 years of experience leading the definition and development of multi-tier web services is essential. A strong understanding of engineering practices and patterns for the entire software/hardware/networks development lifecycle is crucial.
Candidates should possess experience partnering with product or program management teams. Experience in designing or architecting new and existing systems, including knowledge of design patterns, reliability, and scaling, is also a vital requirement. Preferred qualifications include experience communicating with users, technical teams, and senior leadership, as well as a background in recruiting, hiring, mentoring, and managing Software Engineers.
