Amazon seeks a Software Development Engineer II to join our Time & Pay Innovation team. This role is instrumental in developing solutions for intricate People eXperience Technology domains, directly impacting how Amazon associates are paid accurately and on time. As an SDE-II in TAA, you will own and deliver features for a critical real-time platform, processing millions of global IoT punch events. You will be responsible for high-throughput, event-driven architecture, managing employee time expectations and calculating global pay for Amazon's diverse businesses.

Our work involves real-time analytics on data from IoT devices and web interfaces. We maintain high-availability services and require the ability to audit and replay employee timeline data. The team tackles complex, often arcane business rules that vary by role, business, and jurisdiction, operating at Amazon's unparalleled scale. We are building solutions that exceed the capabilities of commodity offerings and are designed for exponential growth.

Take ownership of significant features and components from design through production and operation. Write high-quality, well-tested code using modern languages and design patterns, ensuring rigorous code reviews. Make informed technical decisions, justifying trade-offs related to caching, retries, concurrency, and data modeling. Design systems for scale and resilience, anticipating failure modes and implementing patterns like backpressure and circuit breakers. Ensure operational excellence by monitoring production health, investigating root causes, and improving observability. Contribute to system-level design discussions, offering solutions and challenging assumptions. Mentor junior engineers through pairing and technical guidance. Translate complex business requirements into clear technical designs. Proactively address technical debt, enhancing code quality and system performance. Participate in team processes, contributing to a culture of high engineering standards and improved team velocity.

We are looking for an independent builder with developing design maturity. Candidates should possess a minimum of 3 years of non-internship professional software development experience and 2+ years in system design or architecture, focusing on reliability and scaling. Experience in designing and developing large-scale, multi-tiered, multi-threaded, or distributed software applications, tools, systems, and services using languages like C#, C++, Java, or Perl is required, along with 1+ year of Object-Oriented Design experience. A Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field is necessary. Proficiency in at least one software programming language is a must.
