Join Amazon's People eXperience Technology (PXT) team as a Software Development Engineer II in the Time & Pay Innovation group. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to systems that ensure Amazon associates are paid accurately and on time, globally.

You will be responsible for developing features for one of Amazon's most critical real-time platforms. This involves working with a high-throughput, event-driven architecture that processes millions of IoT events daily. You won't just write code; you'll own entire systems that manage employee time expectations and compute global payroll.

Our work is at the intersection of real-time analytics and event-driven data processing, collecting information from IoT devices and web interfaces. We maintain high-availability services and require robust solutions for handling complex, often arcane business rules that vary by role, business unit, and jurisdiction. We are solving these challenges at Amazon's massive scale, far exceeding the capabilities of standard commodity solutions.

As an SDE-II, you will lead the design and delivery of significant features and components for scalable, multi-tiered applications and services, managing projects from inception through to production operation.

You'll craft high-quality, well-tested production code using modern languages and design patterns, upholding rigorous standards through thorough code reviews. Your role involves making informed technical decisions, evaluating trade-offs in areas like caching and data modeling, and clearly articulating your reasoning.

Design and build for resilience and scalability, anticipating failure modes, traffic surges, and downstream dependencies. Implement advanced patterns like backpressure and circuit breakers. Take ownership of operational excellence by monitoring system health, investigating root causes of issues, and enhancing observability.

Actively participate in system-level design discussions, contributing to architectural improvements and challenging assumptions. Mentor junior engineers, providing guidance and fostering good engineering habits. Translate complex business requirements, including those related to punch processing and compliance, into clear technical designs. Proactively address technical debt to improve code quality and system performance for future growth. Contribute to team processes and culture, enhancing engineering practices and team velocity.

We are seeking a strong, independent builder with developing design maturity. You should be adept at owning significant features and components, driving them from design to production, and operating them with high standards.

Key qualifications include: - A minimum of 3 years of non-internship professional software development experience. - 2+ years of experience in designing or architecting new and existing systems, focusing on reliability and scaling. - 1+ year of experience as a software development engineer or in a related occupation. - 1+ year of experience designing and developing large-scale, multi-tiered, multi-threaded, embedded, or distributed software applications, tools, systems, and services using languages such as C#, C++, Java, or Perl. - 1+ year of experience in Object-Oriented Design. - A Bachelor's degree or its foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field. - Proficiency in at least one software programming language.

Preferred qualifications include 3+ years of experience across the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control, build processes, testing, and operations. A Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent is also preferred.
