Join a new device software team in Bangalore focused on the next generation of Amazon connected devices. As an OS/Kernel Engineer, you will be responsible for the foundational operating system layer, including the Linux kernel, device drivers, RTOS, and bootloaders. Your work will optimize boot time, memory footprint, and power efficiency on resource-constrained hardware, and involve close collaboration with SoC vendors for low-level platform enablement.
This is a critical role within the Alexa Connected Devices team, which ensures low-latency, reliable, and scalable connectivity between Alexa-enabled devices and the Alexa Cloud. You'll contribute to enhancing customer interaction speed and reliability, simplifying the developer experience by abstracting connection management. Our services manage billions of transactions daily, making this a highly visible position with opportunities across inception, feature development, and close partnership with tier-1 Cloud Services.
Develop and maintain Linux kernel configurations, device drivers, and board support packages (BSPs). Optimize critical performance metrics like boot time, memory footprint, and power consumption at the OS level. Implement and maintain secure bootloader chains, including U-Boot and custom solutions. Port and integrate RTOS components, such as FreeRTOS and Zephyr, for companion microcontrollers. Diagnose and resolve complex low-level system issues, including kernel panics, race conditions, and memory leaks. Collaborate effectively with SoC vendors on kernel patches, errata workarounds, and BSP updates. Lead the kernel upgrade strategy and manage long-term support (LTS) branches.
A minimum of 4 years of professional software development experience, excluding internships. 2+ years of experience in designing or architecting new and existing systems, including design patterns, reliability, and scaling. Demonstrated experience programming in at least one software language. 4+ years of dedicated experience in Linux kernel development or systems programming. Proficiency in C/C++ and working knowledge of ARM or RISC-V assembly languages. Proven experience in writing or maintaining Linux device drivers (character, block, network, platform). Deep understanding of memory management (MMU, DMA, cache coherency), scheduler internals, and power management frameworks. Hands-on experience with bootloaders such as U-Boot, GRUB, or custom implementations.
