Job description

Join an innovative team focused on building intelligence systems from the ground up. This role offers the opportunity to collaborate with Applied Scientists, Big Data Engineers, and Software Development Engineers on large-scale data intelligence systems that significantly impact key Amazon pillars like Pricing, Promotions, Advertising, and Inventory management. Experience a team that balances building cutting-edge systems with a strong work-life balance.

Profit Intelligence systems are designed to measure and predict the true profit or loss for each item within a shipment to an Amazon customer. Our mission is to provide intelligent insights into Amazon's profitability across its vast retail business, uncovering hidden factors that drive growth and profitability across millions of daily shipments. We develop and deploy sophisticated systems that not only compute the profitability of every shipment but also predict the profitability of future shipments.

We embrace an agile and "can-do" engineering culture, encouraging bold ideas and a pragmatic approach to execution. Process and procedure are secondary to innovative ideas and the practical work of achieving results. This environment fosters exploration and risk-taking, pushing the boundaries of what's possible using cloud services on AWS, advanced distributed systems, forecasting algorithms, and data mining techniques.

Responsibilities

Architect and construct robust, scalable platforms for ingesting, processing, and serving insights from petabyte-scale datasets. Integrate cutting-edge large language models and generative AI into internal analytics tools, enabling natural language querying, automated anomaly explanations, and report generation. Design and implement machine learning pipelines for anomaly detection, forecasting, and trend analysis on structured and semi-structured business data. Collaborate closely with scientists, analysts, and product managers to translate complex business challenges into effective technical solutions.

Drive engineering excellence by establishing coding standards, leading design reviews, and upholding high standards for operational health, including monitoring, on-call rotations, and runbooks. Mentor junior engineers and enhance the team's technical capabilities through clear documentation and constructive code reviews. Take ownership of services throughout their lifecycle, from development to production operation.

Build and maintain our core data infrastructure, leveraging a comprehensive suite of AWS services such as Redshift Data Shares, S3 data lakes, Step Functions, Glue, Spark, Flink (KDA), and AWS Kinesis. Develop self-service, configurable tools that empower non-engineers and facilitate the generation of unit economics across all Amazon businesses. This includes creating UIs and frameworks for rule configuration, simulation, approval workflows, and high-throughput APIs for serving historical and predicted unit economics data. Implement end-to-end data security and governance, including access control, data quality tracking, dataset cataloging, lineage tracking, duplication detection, usage auditing, and ensuring correct data semantics.

Qualifications

A minimum of 3 years of professional software development experience, excluding internships. Demonstrated experience of at least 2 years in designing or architecting new and existing systems, with a focus on patterns, reliability, and scalability. Proficiency in at least one software programming language is essential.

Preferred qualifications include over 3 years of experience in the full software development lifecycle, encompassing coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations. A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field is also desirable. The role is based in Chennai, TN, India.
