Join the Windows Servicing & Delivery (WSD) team at Microsoft as a Senior Software Engineer specializing in Storage. This role focuses on kernel engineering and ensuring enterprise customer reliability. You will tackle complex issues affecting critical Windows storage technologies like NTFS, ReFS, Storage Spaces Direct (S2D), and Windows Server Failover Clustering (WSFC). This is a unique opportunity to work on high-impact security vulnerabilities and reliability fixes for Fortune 500 production environments.
Microsoft's mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. We foster a growth mindset, drive innovation, and collaborate to achieve our shared goals. Our values of respect, integrity, and accountability create an inclusive culture where everyone can thrive.
Take ownership of critical customer escalations, analyzing memory dumps, traces, and logs to resolve issues within S2D, WSFC, CSV, NTFS, and ReFS. Investigate and fix security vulnerabilities within the Windows storage stack, including privilege escalation and denial-of-service scenarios. Design and implement reliability fixes for kernel-mode storage miniport and file system filter drivers. Work directly with Storage Spaces Direct to diagnose and fix rebuild, rebalance, and fault-domain logic. Maintain and enhance Windows Server Failover Clustering and Cluster Shared Volumes, addressing quorum and failover edge cases. Contribute to the Volume Shadow Copy Service and Windows Backup, fixing provider/requester interaction bugs. Develop diagnostic tooling and automated regression suites for the storage stack. Collaborate with MSRC for security vulnerability disclosure and patch delivery. Provide expert guidance to enterprise customers during active outages and mentor other engineers through code and design reviews.
A Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, coupled with 8+ years of software engineering experience, is required. Deep expertise in C and C++ for Windows kernel-mode development is essential, alongside hands-on experience with the Windows storage driver stack (StorPort, filter drivers, minifilter drivers). A strong foundation in Windows kernel fundamentals and demonstrated ability in crash dump analysis and live kernel debugging using WinDbg are necessary.
Proficiency with on-disk structures for NTFS and familiarity with ReFS are crucial. Experience debugging file system corruption scenarios and understanding the Windows file system minifilter architecture are important. Hands-on experience with Windows Server Failover Clustering and a deep understanding of Cluster Shared Volumes are required. Experience with Storage Spaces Direct, including pool creation, virtual disk provisioning, and fault domain awareness, is also necessary.
Proven ability to manage high-urgency customer escalations, triage issues under pressure, communicate root causes, and deliver targeted fixes is key. Familiarity with storage connectivity protocols like SMB Direct and iSCSI, as well as Microsoft Support tooling such as ProcMon/xperf and WPA, will be beneficial. Experience with Azure Stack HCI, NVMe specification internals, SMB protocol internals, or Windows Data Deduplication are preferred qualifications.
