This Senior Software Engineer role is a unique opportunity within our foundational Global Payroll organization. You will be instrumental in defining the very structure of our payroll data, influencing the capabilities and limitations of our entire payroll product. As a Senior Software Engineer on the Payroll Data team, you will own the design and evolution of core payroll data models, encompassing earnings, deductions, taxes, and employer costs across numerous countries. You'll architect and scale materialization pipelines to transform payroll events into reliable, queryable datasets for reporting, analytics, and compliance.

Key responsibilities include defining and maintaining data contracts crucial for various consumer teams, tackling complex data modeling challenges like temporal state management and multi-country variations, and driving performance optimizations. You'll also enhance observability and operational tooling for data pipelines, lead cross-team technical discussions, mentor junior engineers, and shape the long-term data architecture in collaboration with stakeholders.

We are seeking an experienced engineer with a minimum of 5 years in professional software engineering, specifically focusing on data modeling, data pipelines, or data platform development. A deep understanding of designing data models for complex domains, including normalization, temporal state, and schema evolution trade-offs, is essential.

Proficiency in backend engineering fundamentals, particularly with Python and Django, is required. Experience building and operating large-scale materialization or ETL pipelines, designing clear data contracts, and possessing strong debugging and problem-solving skills are critical. Comfort in ambiguous, cross-functional settings and excellent written and verbal communication are also vital for this role.
