Job description

Join Oracle Cloud Infrastructure's Database Operations team, a vital part of expanding innovative cloud technologies. We are developing scalable public cloud services across Compute, Storage, Networking, Governance, Database, and Load Balancing. This role focuses on operating and enhancing highly available Oracle Database services on Exadata within OCI. If you're a skilled database engineer passionate about solving complex challenges in large-scale, high-availability cloud environments, we invite you to help build and operate next-generation enterprise-class cloud services.

The Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) team offers the opportunity to build and operate substantial-scale, integrated cloud services in a distributed, multi-tenant environment. OCI is dedicated to delivering cloud products that address customer needs for solving significant global challenges. We provide unique opportunities for inquisitive, hands-on engineers with the expertise and passion to tackle difficult problems in highly available distributed services and virtualised infrastructure. Our engineers make a significant technical and business impact through the design, operation, and continuous improvement of innovative systems powering customers' critical business applications.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include providing engineering and operational management for a massively scaled Oracle Database fleet on Exadata in OCI. You will own database availability, performance, capacity, security, and operational readiness for assigned production services. This involves detailed Oracle Database 19c performance analysis, tuning, and diagnostics using tools like AWR, ASH, ADDM, and SQL Monitor. You'll administer, maintain, and troubleshoot Oracle RAC, ASM, Grid Infrastructure, Exadata, Oracle Data Guard, RMAN, and related high-availability technologies.

This role also entails planning, validating, executing, and monitoring Oracle Database, Grid Infrastructure, and Exadata patching and upgrade activities. You will troubleshoot complex production incidents, perform root-cause analysis, and implement corrective actions. Projecting long-range database capacity and operational requirements in partnership with service owners across the Oracle Cloud ecosystem is also a key aspect. Conducting database health checks and audits to ensure secure and reliable database service usage is expected. You will design and implement automation for provisioning, health checks, patching, upgrades, monitoring, and fleet operations using scripting languages. Building self-healing monitors and automation to reduce manual work and improve database stability is crucial. Partnering with development, SRE, infrastructure, and security teams to enhance service architecture, reliability, and performance is essential. Understanding OCI architecture and dependencies is required. Participation in an on-call rotation to support production database services is a must.

Qualifications

We are seeking candidates with 8+ years of experience in Oracle Database Engineering, Database Administration, SRE, DevOps, or Systems Engineering. Essential qualifications include strong hands-on experience administering Oracle Database 19c in production environments and deep expertise in Oracle Database performance analysis, tuning, diagnostics, and troubleshooting. Significant experience with Oracle RAC, ASM, Grid Infrastructure, Oracle Data Guard, RMAN, database upgrades, and quarterly patching is required.

A strong understanding of Exadata architecture, administration, performance, and operational best practices is crucial. You should possess a deep understanding of cloud architecture and OCI services, including networking, storage, compute, IAM, observability, and security. Proficiency in scripting languages like Python, Shell, or Perl is necessary. Familiarity with infrastructure automation and orchestration tools such as Ansible, Terraform, Jenkins, or Chef is advantageous. Experience with incident response, root-cause analysis, change management, and production operational processes is expected.

Candidates must demonstrate the ability to lead complex technical investigations and ensure sound technical analysis drives changes and enhancements. Excellent problem-solving, critical-thinking, and communication skills are paramount. A consistently positive, collaborative, and ownership-driven approach to work is highly valued, fostering trusted partnerships and a culture of continuous learning. The ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, evolving environment and an excellent command of written and spoken English are essential. A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience, is required.
