Join WEX Mobility Engineering as a Sr. Software Engineer, focusing on International Mobility solutions for our global clientele. This role is integral to developing and enhancing SaaS and API-driven fleet management and payment systems for EU and APAC markets. Drive the design, development, and maintenance of high-performance backend services using object-oriented principles. Develop public REST and internal gRPC APIs to facilitate seamless communication across systems. Lead critical system design decisions and ensure alignment with engineering best practices. Implement comprehensive automated testing, including unit, integration, end-to-end, and performance tests. Analyze existing systems to identify and resolve bottlenecks, reduce technical debt, and enhance scalability and stability.

Automate testing, monitoring, healing, and scaling processes, integrating continuous integration and deployment to accelerate time-to-market. Collaborate with product managers, designers, and fellow engineers to bring new features to life. Conduct thorough code reviews, mentor junior engineers, and foster a culture of engineering excellence. Troubleshoot complex issues, devise effective fixes, and author root cause analyses to ensure sustained performance and reliability. Evaluate and recommend new technologies, and maintain robust documentation for designs, runbooks, and change management.

Provide essential live-site support, actively monitoring production systems for rapid incident resolution and continuous improvement. Take ownership of cross-team projects as a Single-Threaded Owner or Technical Lead, proactively unblocking other engineers to ensure project momentum.

A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering is required, coupled with a minimum of 5 years of professional software engineering experience. Essential skills include a strong grasp of data structures, algorithms, object-oriented design, and problem-solving. Expertise in designing internet-scale services with a focus on scalability, availability, security, and reliability is crucial.

Excellent written and verbal communication abilities, alongside a collaborative and empathetic approach, are vital for success in this role. Proficiency in backend development is expected, with expertise in Java or C#, and experience with frameworks like Spring Boot. Experience building and optimizing RESTful APIs, the ODATA framework, and SQL is also required.

Preferred qualifications include a Master’s degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering, and 8 years of software engineering experience. Familiarity with event-driven architectures (e.g., Kafka), card payments, cloud-native architectures (Docker, Kubernetes), API security, and PCI DSS compliance is advantageous. The ability to adapt to and improve existing codebases, including legacy systems, is also highly valued.
