This role offers the opportunity to infuse AI into Word, enhancing user experiences across mobile, web, and desktop platforms. You'll work on cutting-edge features, from core word processing capabilities to advanced conversational AI for writing.

As a Senior Applied Scientist, you will pioneer AI-driven experiences connecting natural language with the Word interface. Your work will help Copilot leverage organizational context for relevant, secure results. Within a dynamic, customer-focused environment, you'll collaborate with product, design, and engineering teams to deliver AI solutions at a global scale, addressing mobile-specific constraints.

Develop and enhance AI models, prompting, retrieval systems, and evaluation metrics for Word Mobile and Copilot. Design intelligent features utilizing Work IQ signals while ensuring security and responsible AI practices. Build mobile-first Copilot functionalities for drafting, rewriting, and refining content, maintaining high precision and document integrity. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate and maintain AI capabilities across various platforms. Conduct rigorous evaluations for quality, safety, and user satisfaction, translating findings into product improvements.

Utilize customer feedback and telemetry to identify authoring needs and prioritize enhancements. Communicate research insights, contribute to design reviews, and foster team knowledge. Drive impact through reusable artifacts, publications, or patents where appropriate.

A Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field (Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering) with 4+ years of experience, or a Master's Degree with 3+ years, or a Doctorate with 1+ year of experience in statistics, predictive analytics, or research. Equivalent experience will also be considered.

Preferred qualifications include a strong background in Python, experience with machine learning frameworks like PyTorch, and expertise in developing large language models, retrieval-augmented systems, or agentic AI applications. Demonstrated success in translating research into production services, with experience in mobile constraints, online experimentation, and AI system building over contextual data is highly valued. Excellent collaboration and technical leadership skills are essential.
