Job description

Join the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK) team at Oracle Linux, where we shape the core of enterprise and cloud computing. We're dedicated to enhancing the Linux kernel's performance, reliability, and security for demanding workloads. Our engineers thrive on tackling intricate kernel challenges across diverse hardware, collaborating with teams worldwide to build a robust foundation for cloud infrastructure at scale.

We are actively seeking a skilled Linux Kernel Engineer to contribute to the development, maintenance, and security of our critical kernel software. This role offers the opportunity to investigate complex system issues, deliver impactful kernel changes, and partner with global engineering teams to elevate reliability, performance, and security.

Responsibilities

Develop, debug, test, and maintain Linux kernel code and patches, ensuring high standards of quality and stability. Review kernel changes meticulously for correctness, maintainability, performance impacts, and regression risks. Proactively assess security vulnerabilities (CVEs), backporting, validating, and delivering timely fixes. Investigate kernel crashes, performance bottlenecks, and production issues using advanced debugging and tracing tools. Collaborate effectively with engineering, security, and operations teams to prioritize issues and implement prompt resolutions. Contribute to global operational support through clear documentation and seamless handoffs across regions. Enhance testing, automation, and engineering workflows to efficiently manage our growing kernel workload.

Qualifications

Requires strong C proficiency and practical experience in developing or maintaining Linux kernel software. A solid grasp of operating system fundamentals, including memory management, concurrency, synchronization, and process scheduling, is essential. Experience in diagnosing complex systems issues using crash dumps, logs, tracing, and debugging tools is necessary. Familiarity with kernel patch review, backporting, testing, and regression analysis is expected. Proficiency in using Git and collaborating on large codebases is required. Ability to independently own engineering tasks, communicate technical findings clearly, and work effectively with distributed teams is crucial. A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience of 6+ years is necessary.
