Shape the future of cloud reliability by working at the intersection of hardware and cloud infrastructure. At OCI, you'll tackle complex failures, implement robust solutions, and enhance firmware testing and deployment across our global platform.
This Principal Systems Firmware Engineer role focuses on designing, developing, and refining BMC firmware or BIOS/UEFI, alongside the tools that support their seamless deployment within OCI's server and GPU environments. You will be instrumental in solving intricate engineering challenges that span firmware, hardware, and operating systems, driving improvements in platform reliability, diagnosability, security, and recovery.
Your initial efforts will concentrate on optimizing existing platforms in our fleet. By analyzing production data, you'll identify design vulnerabilities, develop and validate firmware fixes, enhance automated testing protocols, and proactively eliminate recurring failure patterns. The ultimate goal is to deliver lasting improvements that minimize failures and reduce the need for manual intervention.
Lead firmware development, integration, and maintenance for BMC or BIOS/UEFI components. Diagnose and resolve complex fleet issues, including boot failures, management controller faults, and hardware initialization problems.
Provide essential operational support by participating in an on-call rotation, coordinating incident response with global teams, and ensuring clear communication of status and resolution.
Develop robust automation and preventive controls for firmware provisioning, diagnostics, and recovery. Enhance telemetry and logging for improved failure analysis and incident reduction.
Drive software quality and security through maintainable code, rigorous code reviews, comprehensive testing, and adherence to secure development practices. Contribute to platform bring-up by diagnosing cross-component interactions and isolating faults.
Collaborate effectively with internal engineering teams and external partners, including hardware, silicon, and ODM/JDM vendors. Offer technical leadership, mentor junior engineers, and contribute to team growth and best practices.
A strong foundation in software development is required, evidenced by 11 years of experience. Alternatively, a Bachelor's or B.Tech in a relevant engineering or computing field, combined with 7 years of development experience, is acceptable. A Master's or M.Tech degree in a similar field requires 5 years of experience, while a Doctorate necessitates 3 years.
Proficiency in programming and scripting languages is essential, with a particular emphasis on C/C++ and building diagnostic and automation tools (at least 6 years of experience). Substantial hands-on experience in BMC firmware or BIOS/UEFI development and debugging, coupled with a deep understanding of server architecture, embedded systems, hardware/software interfaces, and Linux fundamentals, is crucial.
Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex issues across firmware, hardware, and operating systems is expected. Experience guiding software components from design through release and support, developing automated tests and tooling, and contributing to platform reliability and observability is key. Candidates should possess leadership potential, mentoring skills, and strong communication abilities, with a willingness to participate in an on-call rotation.
