Join a pioneering team at OCI, shaping the intersection of hardware capabilities and cloud reliability through advanced firmware solutions. This role offers a unique opportunity to delve into challenging system-level failures, engineer robust and enduring fixes, and significantly enhance the testing, deployment, and operational processes for firmware across our extensive infrastructure.
As a Principal Systems Firmware Engineer, you will be instrumental in designing, developing, and refining BMC firmware or BIOS/UEFI, along with the critical tools supporting their widespread deployment across OCI’s server and GPU hardware. You will tackle intricate engineering challenges spanning firmware, hardware, and operating systems, driving improvements that bolster platform reliability, enhance diagnosability, strengthen security, and facilitate effective recovery.
Your initial efforts will concentrate on delivering engineering enhancements for platforms already operational within our global fleet. By analyzing production findings, you will pinpoint design weaknesses, develop and rigorously validate firmware fixes, expand automated testing capabilities, and systematically eliminate recurring failure modes. The ultimate measure of success lies in delivering durable improvements that minimize failures and reduce the necessity for manual intervention.
Take full ownership of firmware development and seamless integration. This includes designing, developing, debugging, and maintaining core BMC or BIOS/UEFI components and their supporting systems software, while also defining clear, efficient interfaces across firmware, hardware, operating systems, and fleet management services.
Lead critical investigations into complex fleet-wide issues such as boot failures, management controller malfunctions, firmware update problems, hardware initialization faults, and other platform reliability concerns. Your role will involve developing effective mitigations, establishing root causes, and delivering lasting resolutions.
Provide essential operational support, including participation in the India daytime on-call rotation. You will coordinate investigations and handoffs with US-based teams, ensuring clear and timely communication regarding impact, progress, and resolutions.
Drive the development of automation and preventive controls by creating tools for firmware provisioning, updates, diagnostics, recovery, and validation. Enhance telemetry, logging, and failure analysis to proactively reduce recurring incidents and minimize manual intervention.
Champion software quality and security through writing maintainable code, leading design and code reviews, and developing comprehensive functional, regression, negative, and recovery tests. Adhere to secure development practices and actively contribute to firmware vulnerability remediation efforts.
Contribute significantly to platform bring-up by diagnosing intricate interactions across firmware, hardware, bootloaders, and operating systems. Utilize platform logs and advanced hardware debugging tools to isolate faults and validate end-to-end system behavior.
Collaborate effectively with cross-functional engineering teams and vendor partners, including hardware, silicon, operating system, validation, and fleet operations teams. As product development expands, engage with ODM/JDM partners on requirements, defect resolution, firmware releases, and overall platform readiness.
Provide strong technical leadership by owning the delivery of complex engineering work, identifying dependencies and risks, documenting designs and debugging methodologies, mentoring junior engineers, and actively contributing to hiring and continuous improvement initiatives.
To be considered for this role, candidates must meet specific educational and experience criteria. One pathway involves 11 years of comprehensive software development experience. Alternatively, candidates with a Bachelor's degree or B.Tech in a relevant engineering, computing, information technology, mathematics, physics, or a closely related field, coupled with 7 years of software development experience, are encouraged to apply.
Further options include a Master's degree or M.Tech in a specified field, requiring 5 years of software development experience, or a Doctorate in one of these fields, necessitating 3 years of software development experience.
All candidates must possess at least 6 years of experience utilizing programming and scripting languages, with a strong command of C/C++ and demonstrated ability in building diagnostic and automation tools. A proven track record in hands-on development and debugging of BMC firmware or BIOS/UEFI is essential, alongside the capacity to analyze interactions across the broader server platform.
Essential knowledge includes a robust understanding of server architecture, embedded systems, hardware/software interfaces, and fundamental Linux concepts. Candidates should exhibit a strong aptitude for diagnosing complex issues across firmware, hardware, and operating systems, using evidence to differentiate symptoms from root causes.
Experience in managing software components through their entire lifecycle—design, implementation, code review, testing, release, and ongoing support—is vital. Furthermore, experience developing automated tests, diagnostics, or operational tooling, with a focus on enhancing reliability, observability, or performance, is highly valued.
Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to lead technical investigations, mentor colleagues effectively, and communicate clearly across diverse engineering teams and external partners. A commitment to participating in the India daytime on-call rotation is also required.
