Join GitHub's Enterprise Server Release team as a Principal Engineering Manager, leading the development of critical release pipeline components. This role involves overseeing OS and container builds, infrastructure, application layers, package generation, certification, integration test environments, and artifact distribution across major cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, GCP). You will shape the team's technical and operational direction, drive execution across a complex release surface, and collaborate with engineering partners to ensure GHES is delivered as a high-quality, secure, and dependable appliance for enterprise clients.
This is an opportunity to make a significant impact on the reliability and efficiency of GitHub's enterprise offerings.
Lead and nurture a talented engineering team focused on GHES release systems, validation environments, and package delivery. Define and own the engineering roadmap for GHES release systems, ensuring a balance between reliability, velocity, operational health, and future platform investments. Drive the end-to-end execution of build, package generation, validation, certification, and customer delivery workflows for all GHES releases. Develop and maintain robust, representative, and scalable integration test environments crucial for continuous GHES release validation. Enhance CI quality, signal reliability, issue detection, and triage processes in collaboration with cross-functional teams to boost release readiness and reduce resolution times. Partner with engineering leaders across platform, infrastructure, application, and release domains to refine release readiness, debugging, and root-cause analysis. Establish and enforce high standards for release reliability, observability, compliance, and operational excellence across all build, release, and certification processes. Prioritize investments for the GHES Release team, balancing immediate delivery needs with long-term improvements in reliability, efficiency, and engineering velocity. Cultivate an inclusive, high-performing team culture defined by accountability, collaboration, technical excellence, and continuous improvement. Ensure strong operational stewardship of release infrastructure, including clear accountability, effective incident response, and proactive improvement following critical incidents.
A minimum of 9 years of experience in software engineering, computer science, or a closely related technical field is required. Demonstrated experience in maintaining and delivering production software, with proficiency in languages such as Go, Ruby, Rust, Python, JavaScript, C, C++, C#, or Java. At least 3 years of experience leading engineering teams responsible for complex infrastructure, platform, release, or validation systems. Proven ability to define technical direction and drive execution across multiple engineers or teams within a complex, cross-functional environment. Strong track record of hiring, coaching, and developing engineers while upholding high standards for technical quality and operational excellence. Exceptional ability to collaborate across organizations, align stakeholders, and enhance the reliability, delivery predictability, and engineering effectiveness of business-critical systems. A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Math, Physics, Computer Engineering, or a related field is necessary.
