Join Amazon Shipping as a Principal Software Engineer and spearhead the development of a cutting-edge optimization engine for our external logistics network. This role is pivotal in seamlessly integrating first-mile route planning with middle-mile network optimization, creating a unified system for superior end-to-end recommendations. You will tackle complex technical challenges, including optimizing solvers that currently require hours per run and navigating vast combinatorial search spaces. This position offers a unique opportunity to impact commercial decisions directly, influencing shipper acquisition, geographical expansion, and contract repricing.
Beyond technical contributions, you will provide essential tech leadership for the Amazon Shipping fulfillment charter. Your efforts will focus on driving revenue growth by increasing label conversion rates, building a resilient network through dynamic capacity management, and enhancing speed in upstream planning systems. Additionally, you will resolve distinctive challenges related to delivery addresses within an externalized supply chain environment.
Furthermore, you will be instrumental in upholding the architectural integrity and scalability of our fulfillment systems. This includes defining interface contracts with partner teams, fostering agility for faster feature deployment, improving the resilience and availability of critical systems, and optimizing the orchestration of services within the fulfillment domain.
Architect the integrated first-mile and middle-mile optimization loop, defining state-passing contracts, convergence detection, parallel execution, and checkpoint/restart mechanisms. Solve computational challenges through sophisticated pruning techniques, lightweight solvers, and network-scale metaheuristic search. Drive alignment across more than five organizations, ensuring stable interfaces and committed roadmap items. Translate complex optimization outputs into practical recommendations for Operations, Commercial, and Finance teams, covering aspects like node mapping, capacity planning, shipper targets, and contract economics. Mentor a team of Applied Scientists and Software Development Engineers, establishing a high technical bar and cultivating an experimentation-driven culture. Define and execute a phased roadmap, progressing from a first-mile cost optimizer to a joint first-mile/middle-mile optimizer, and ultimately to decision engines that bridge network optimization with commercial strategy. Own system validation and accuracy by designing feedback loops, detecting degradation, and defining appropriate refresh cadences for predicted outcomes.
A minimum of 12 years of software development experience with a demonstrated progression in scope, complemented by 7 years in system architecture. Proven ability to navigate ambiguous problem spaces—where requirements, success metrics, and solution approaches are initially undefined—and drive them to concrete technical strategies and execution. Experience in communicating effectively with technical teams, business stakeholders, and leadership to gather requirements, articulate technical designs, and align on product strategy. A strong track record of influencing technical direction across five or more partner organizations without direct reporting authority. Experience in mentoring senior engineers and scientists. Demonstrated experience in building and deploying decision-support systems that have been successfully adopted by non-technical stakeholders.
