Job description

Join the Windows Enterprise and Security (ENS) team, building core capabilities that ensure Windows operating systems are secure and trusted globally. This role focuses on foundational security investments including hardware-backed security, cryptography, identity, authentication, and enterprise management. As a Principal Software Engineer, you will design and deliver critical security and enterprise features that impact billions of users and enterprises worldwide, shaping the future of Windows' trust model and platform resilience.

Microsoft is dedicated to empowering every person and organization to achieve more. We foster a culture of inclusion, innovation, and growth, driven by our values of respect, integrity, and accountability. Together, we create a collaborative environment where everyone can thrive.

Responsibilities

Design and implement scalable Windows security and enterprise features across client and server platforms. Develop solutions in key areas like hardware-backed security, cryptography, identity/authentication, and enterprise management.

Produce high-quality, maintainable code with rigorous engineering practices, ensuring robust diagnostics and operational readiness for global deployment. Collaborate with security and platform stakeholders to uphold secure-by-default principles and meet compliance standards.

Partner with ENS teams in Redmond and across Windows engineering to align on roadmaps and technical objectives. Own the end-to-end development lifecycle from requirements to deployment.

Utilize AI-assisted and agentic engineering workflows to enhance design, debugging, testing, and documentation processes, maintaining strict security and quality standards. Establish reusable AI patterns to promote safe and repeatable team usage, improving efficiency in root cause analysis, test generation, and automation of repetitive tasks.

Qualifications

Requires a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, coupled with 12+ years of technical engineering experience. Proficiency in coding languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python is essential. Alternatively, equivalent experience will be considered.

Demonstrated experience in building and shipping production software using systems languages (e.g., C/C++/C#/Rust) and debugging complex systems is required. Expertise in at least one of the following areas is crucial: platform security, cryptography, identity/authentication, secure boot/TPM, device security, enterprise policy/management, or licensing/entitlement systems.

Experience designing and developing features for large-scale, performance-sensitive systems, ideally with deep knowledge of Windows or other operating systems, is highly preferred. Preferred qualifications include expertise in Public Key Cryptography/Post Quantum Cryptography (PQC) and a proven track record of driving engineering quality, including test strategy, telemetry, reliability, and operational excellence. Comfort in cross-geographical collaboration and influencing stakeholders across engineering and leadership is also valued.
