Job description

Join a core AI team focused on cloud-scale testing solutions that empower developers to ensure application reliability, performance, and quality. We are building Azure Load Testing and Playwright Workspaces, enabling teams to test at scale without infrastructure management. As AI and autonomous agents become integral to applications, we're extending our platform to support these agentic workloads. Playwright Workspaces offers managed, cloud-hosted browsers for secure, high-scale browser automation.

This Principal Software Engineer role offers a unique opportunity for deep technical leadership in shaping the future of Azure App Testing. You will be instrumental in delivering secure, reliable, and scalable developer services in a hands-on, individual contributor capacity. Your contributions will involve leading architecture and implementation across services, transforming customer needs into robust platform capabilities, and elevating engineering standards through mentorship and technical expertise.

Responsibilities

Define and enhance the architecture for distributed, multi-tenant testing services, prioritizing reliability, performance, security, operability, and cost-effectiveness.

Lead critical initiatives from concept and prototyping through implementation and ongoing operation, actively participating in coding, design, and code reviews.

Develop robust execution and orchestration capabilities for load testing and managed browser automation, focusing on scheduling, concurrency, isolation, and resilient error handling.

Shape user-friendly APIs, developer tools, and CI/CD integrations to seamlessly embed testing into development and release pipelines.

Drive advancements in AI-assisted testing through rigorous evaluation, observable behavior, ethical safeguards, and quantifiable measures of quality and customer value.

Ensure live-site excellence via actionable telemetry, defined service-level objectives, effective incident response, root-cause analysis, and proactive issue prevention; contribute to the team's on-call rotation.

Integrate security, privacy, accessibility, and responsible AI principles into all design and delivery processes, including identity management, access control, and customer data protection.

Collaborate with product managers, engineers, architects, security experts, and customers to set strategic priorities, align architectural vision, manage dependencies, and deliver unified platform solutions.

Mentor fellow engineers, cultivate inclusive technical dialogues, and refine engineering practices for testing, deployment safety, serviceability, and overall developer productivity.

Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience, is required.

Possess over 10 years of extensive experience in designing, building, and operating production software, with a proven track record of technical leadership on complex, multi-component initiatives.

Demonstrate strong software engineering proficiency in at least one core language such as C#, Java, C++, Go, Python, or TypeScript, emphasizing maintainable design, comprehensive automated testing, and effective code review practices.

Exhibit a deep understanding of distributed systems, service architecture, API design principles, concurrency management, fault tolerance strategies, and performance engineering best practices.

Have hands-on experience operating cloud services and diagnosing intricate production issues utilizing telemetry data, debugging techniques, and structured root-cause analysis.

Showcase the ability to lead through influence, articulate architectural trade-offs clearly, foster cross-disciplinary collaboration, and effectively mentor engineers.

Maintain a customer-centric mindset and a steadfast commitment to engineering practices that are secure, reliable, and inclusive.

Preferred qualifications include experience with Azure or comparable cloud platforms, containerized workloads, Kubernetes, and multi-tenant service infrastructure. Familiarity with browser automation or end-to-end testing using Playwright, and performance testing tools like JMeter or Locust, is beneficial. Experience building developer platforms, SDKs, command-line tools, or integrations with systems like GitHub, Azure DevOps, and CI/CD pipelines is advantageous. Additionally, experience in optimizing cloud resource utilization, execution scheduling, service scalability, infrastructure cost, and with AI-assisted developer tools or agentic workflows, including responsible AI practices, is highly valued. Collaboration with open-source communities or building services on open-source technologies is a plus.
