Join the GitHub Developer Experience (DX) team as a Principal Engineering Manager and lead a team focused on critical systems that enhance GitHub's internal engineering workflows. The DX team drives improvements in how engineers build, test, and deploy software across the company, tackling significant scale and complexity. Our work encompasses CI/CD platforms, developer tools, virtual infrastructure, and streamlined development paths that ensure speed, reliability, and security.

We equip engineers with the tools, services, and operational support necessary for safe and efficient production deployments. This involves managing highly available company-wide CI platforms, collaborating with application and platform teams to boost reliability and performance, and consistently minimizing friction in the developer journey. The team is instrumental in upholding trust in GitHub's build and test infrastructure, balancing speed, scale, and stability.

As a Principal Engineering Manager, you will guide a team responsible for mission-critical systems in a dynamic environment. Your role involves close collaboration with engineers company-wide to enhance CI reliability, reduce test flakiness, manage incidents, and adapt platforms for a rapidly growing organization. This position integrates people leadership, technical acumen, and operational ownership, directly impacting the daily experience of GitHub engineers and the quality of products used by millions worldwide.

Your responsibilities will include: - Collaborating with diverse teams to align on and solve key problems. - Removing obstacles for your team members to tackle critical GitHub challenges. - Communicating progress and risks effectively to stakeholders and leadership. - Coordinating team efforts, building relationships, and identifying improvement opportunities. - Ensuring high-quality architectural designs, secure systems, and reliable code. - Iteratively delivering features and fixes, balancing market speed with future velocity. - Conducting 1:1s to provide feedback and support career growth.

We are seeking candidates with a strong background in software engineering and leadership. The ideal candidate will possess:

- A minimum of 9 years of experience in software engineering, computer science, or a related technical field. - Demonstrated experience in maintaining and delivering production software using languages such as Go, Ruby, Rust, Python, JavaScript, C, C++, C#, or Java. - At least 3 years of experience leading engineering teams that deliver complex infrastructure, platform, release, or validation systems. - Proven ability to define technical direction and drive execution across multiple engineers or teams in a complex, cross-functional setting. - A track record of hiring, coaching, and developing engineers while upholding high standards for technical quality and operational excellence. - Expertise in partnering across organizations, aligning stakeholders, and improving the reliability, predictability, and effectiveness of business-critical systems. - A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Math, Physics, Computer Engineering, or a related field is required.

Preferred qualifications include experience with large-scale CI/CD and build systems, managing operationally critical platforms, cross-team collaboration, familiarity with test infrastructure challenges, and experience in remote and distributed team environments.
