Join the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) team and contribute to building and operating massive-scale, coordinated cloud services. We are a dynamic organization focused on accelerating OCI's compute and network capacity expansion through innovative services and tools. Our platform supports the entire lifecycle of data centers, from planning and design to operation and decommissioning, enabling efficient growth and meeting the high-demand needs of large customers.
This Principal Software Development Engineer role offers significant autonomy and the chance to influence the direction of a foundational cloud platform. You will be instrumental in defining the architecture and engineering strategy for highly available, scalable services managing physical assets. This position is ideal for a hands-on technical leader passionate about solving complex, cross-organizational problems and elevating engineering standards.
As a Principal Core Infrastructure Engineer, you will:
- Own and advance the technical architecture for services that drive OCI's compute and network capacity growth. - Lead the design and delivery of resilient, scalable, and secure services for the complete physical asset lifecycle. - Translate long-term business and infrastructure objectives into actionable technical strategies and roadmaps. - Remain actively involved in development by prototyping key areas, conducting code and design reviews, and guiding the implementation of critical components. - Foster collaboration across engineering, product, operations, and security teams, establishing clear integration points. - Define and uphold operational excellence standards, focusing on observability, service health, incident management, and reliability. - Identify and address systemic risks, technical debt, and scaling bottlenecks, prioritizing improvements based on customer impact and data. - Elevate engineering practices through architectural reviews, setting standards, and providing mentorship.
We are seeking a hands-on cloud engineer and technical leader with:
- A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. - Over 10 years of professional software development experience, with a strong background in designing, deploying, and operating scalable, cloud-native distributed systems. - Proven technical leadership in complex, multi-service initiatives, including architecture definition, roadmapping, and cross-team delivery. - Proficiency in high-level programming languages such as Go and/or Java, along with scripting languages like Python. - Deep understanding of distributed systems fundamentals, microservice patterns, data consistency, fault tolerance, and high-availability design. - Experience designing production services with robust observability features (SLIs/SLOs, dashboards, metrics, alarms, capacity planning, runbooks). - Proven production operations experience, including incident response, root-cause analysis, and driving reliability improvements. - A strong foundation in computer science concepts. - The ability to author and present technical proposals, architecture documents, and design specifications. - Experience mentoring engineers and enhancing engineering practices.
Preferred qualifications include a Master's or PhD, experience with cloud provider infrastructure, physical asset lifecycle management, DCIM systems, Kubernetes, Infrastructure as Code (Terraform), and diagnosing complex performance and scaling issues in large distributed environments.
