Job description

Join the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) team, a dynamic group focused on building and operating large-scale, coordinated cloud services within a distributed, multi-tenant environment. We are committed to developing cloud products that address significant global challenges.

The OCI Infrastructure Delivery Engineering organization plays a crucial role in creating the services and tools that expedite OCI's expansion of compute and network capacity. Our platform manages the entire lifecycle of data centers and their physical assets, from initial planning and design through operation and eventual decommissioning. This enables OCI to grow efficiently and launch new regions, meeting the high-capacity demands of hyperscale customers.

We are looking for a hands-on Principal Software Development Engineer to provide technical leadership for a new greenfield platform. This role involves defining the architecture and engineering strategy for highly available, scalable services that manage physical assets throughout their lifecycle. You will tackle complex, cross-organizational problems, establish enduring technical patterns, and elevate engineering standards while remaining actively involved in design, implementation, operational excellence, and customer satisfaction.

Responsibilities

Take ownership of and advance the technical architecture for services and tools designed to accelerate OCI's compute and network capacity growth.

Lead the development of resilient, scalable, secure, and operable services that support the entire lifecycle of physical assets.

Translate long-term business and infrastructure objectives into clear technical strategies, architectural roadmaps, and phased execution plans.

Maintain hands-on involvement by prototyping critical functions, conducting code and design reviews, resolving challenging technical issues, and guiding the implementation of high-risk components.

Foster alignment across engineering, product, operations, security, and partner teams, establishing clear interfaces and robust integration contracts.

Define and advocate for operational excellence standards, encompassing observability, service health, incident learning, capacity planning, and reliability targets.

Identify systemic risks, technical debt, and scaling bottlenecks, prioritizing improvements based on customer impact and data-driven analysis.

Elevate technical standards through architectural reviews, engineering best practices, mentorship, and constructive feedback.

Influence key decisions for both new and existing products, build consensus around trade-offs, and clearly communicate these decisions to all stakeholders.

Cultivate a culture of ownership, continuous learning, simplicity, and iterative delivery, ensuring a balance between speed and quality.

Qualifications

Seeking a seasoned cloud engineer and technical leader adept at delivering high-impact, large-scale distributed systems.

Proficiency in translating ambiguous business and infrastructure challenges into clear technical strategies, phased execution plans, and measurable outcomes.

Deep commitment to customer needs, making sound trade-offs between reliability, security, velocity, simplicity, and cost.

Excellent communication skills for conveying complex technical concepts to engineers, product leaders, and partner teams.

Ability to set high engineering standards, leverage data for consensus building, and constructively challenge assumptions.

Thrives in fast-paced environments, demonstrates cross-organizational ownership, and mentors engineers at various levels.

Minimum qualifications include a BS/BTech in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience, coupled with 10+ years in professional software development. This includes substantial experience in designing, shipping, and operating scalable, cloud-native distributed systems.

Demonstrated technical leadership in complex, multi-service initiatives, covering architecture definition, technical roadmaps, design reviews, and cross-team delivery. Strong proficiency in at least one high-level programming language, preferably Go and/or Java, and expertise in scripting/automation languages like Python.

Extensive experience with distributed systems fundamentals, microservice design patterns, service-to-service communication, data consistency, fault tolerance, and highly available service design. Experience designing production services with robust observability, including SLIs/SLOs, dashboards, metrics, alarms, capacity planning, and operational runbooks.

Proven production operations experience, encompassing incident response, root-cause analysis, on-call practices, and driving systemic reliability improvements. A strong foundation in computer science concepts like data structures, algorithms, concurrency, and programming paradigms is essential. Ability to author and communicate technical proposals, architecture documents, design specifications, and presentations for diverse audiences.

Experience mentoring engineers and enhancing engineering practices through code reviews, design reviews, and technical guidance. Preferred qualifications include an MS or PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience. Experience building control-plane and/or data-plane solutions for cloud providers or large-scale infrastructure companies is also desirable.
