This senior individual contributor position is instrumental in guiding packaging initiatives across diverse product portfolios and regions. You will integrate packaging design engineering, regulatory adherence, sustainability practices, and global program oversight, with a significant emphasis on implementing the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and preparing for future international packaging regulations.

Lead the comprehensive global program for Packaging Regulation, Sustainability, and PPWR, ensuring effective execution across all product portfolios, functions, and geographical areas. Drive subsequent phases of PPWR implementation, encompassing thorough regulatory impact assessments, identification of compliance gaps, development of adherence roadmaps, proactive risk mitigation, and strategic execution.

Proactively monitor evolving packaging regulations, translating complex requirements into clear, actionable packaging engineering and business directives. Provide essential hands-on packaging engineering expertise to design, assess, and enhance packaging solutions, offering crucial support for select New Product Introduction (NPI), productivity, and cost-optimization projects.

Spearhead sustainable packaging initiatives, focusing on material minimization, enhanced recyclability, increased recycled content, material simplification, and the adoption of environmentally sound alternatives. Identify opportunities to reduce or substitute materials like foam, plastics, and wood, without compromising packaging performance or product protection.

Establish foundational principles, robust standards, and clear guidelines for packaging Design-for-Sustainability. Foster strong partnerships with Engineering, Manufacturing, Sourcing, Quality, Regulatory Affairs, Product Compliance, Sustainability teams, suppliers, and other global stakeholders to ensure seamless compliance and effective implementation.

Define stringent supplier packaging compliance and sustainability requirements, collaborating closely with suppliers to pinpoint suitable packaging technologies and materials. Develop and maintain packaging material data, compliance tracking systems, reporting frameworks, governance structures, and key performance indicators (KPIs).

Champion the harmonization and standardization of packaging materials and solutions where strategically advantageous. Consistently communicate program advancements, identified regulatory risks, strategic priorities, and detailed mitigation plans to leadership, while simultaneously raising organizational awareness regarding packaging regulations and sustainability mandates.

A Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering or a comparable technical field with substantial packaging experience is required. A minimum of 10 years of relevant professional experience, including extensive hands-on packaging engineering and design capabilities, is essential.

Possess strong knowledge of various packaging materials and technologies, such as plastics, paper/fiber, corrugated materials, films, foams, wood, and protective packaging systems. Demonstrate prior experience in packaging sustainability and a solid understanding of packaging regulatory and compliance requirements.

Exhibit a proven track record of leading complex programs and effectively influencing diverse cross-functional stakeholders across multiple regions. Showcase experience in collaborating with Engineering, Manufacturing, Sourcing, Quality, Regulatory/Product Compliance, suppliers, and related functional areas.

Strong command of program management methodologies, stakeholder engagement strategies, communication techniques, and influencing skills is paramount. A degree or advanced education specifically in Packaging Engineering, packaging sustainability, or a related discipline is highly desirable.

Experience within the packaging industry, industrial packaging, specialized packaging solutions, or similarly complex packaging environments is preferred. Familiarity or prior experience with PPWR or comparable packaging regulatory frameworks would be advantageous.

Experience leading sustainable packaging initiatives that encompass recyclability, material reduction, material substitution, or the incorporation of recycled content is beneficial. Possess strong capabilities in supplier collaboration, risk management, change leadership, and executive-level communication.

An ability to operate independently as a senior technical expert, while effectively influencing teams without direct reporting authority, is a key characteristic for success in this role.
