Join AWS Infrastructure Services, the team responsible for the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. We are the backbone that keeps the cloud running, supporting data centers and all associated equipment to ensure customers have continuous access to innovation. You will be part of a dynamic, diverse team of engineers and specialists tackling complex supply chain challenges.
We foster an inclusive culture that encourages bold ideas and empowers individuals to see them through to completion. Collaboration across AWS is key to delivering unparalleled safety, security, and cost-effectiveness, while providing infinite capacity.
As an Optical Network Development Engineer on the Capacity Restoration Team (CRT), you will be a builder of novel solutions that push beyond traditional industry approaches. Your work will focus on the component level of CRT's optical transport restoration stack.
You will be responsible for troubleshooting, diagnosing, and restoring out-of-service DWDM capacity across Amazon's backbone and metro optical networks. This includes building and enhancing automation to accelerate optical capacity restoration, covering everything from fiber fault isolation to amplifier recovery and wavelength re-provisioning.
Your scope will encompass small to mid-size optical components, features, and processes. You will actively learn and apply the team's optical architecture to develop robust solutions, writing secure, stable, testable, and maintainable code with minimal defects. This role uniquely blends optical operations with software engineering, enabling you to both operate the network and write code to optimize operational efficiency.
Key responsibilities include optical restoration and troubleshooting across DWDM networks, diagnosing optical impairments, and executing optical test measurements. You will develop link test plans, coordinate with fiber operations and vendor teams, and build automation components to accelerate restoration workflows.
Further duties involve extending existing tooling for improved monitoring and alerting, developing scripts to correlate optical alarms, and writing clean, testable code in Python with documentation. You will also create and maintain operational metrics, contribute to network health dashboards, and participate in on-call rotations for follow-the-sun coverage.
Basic qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience, with at least one year of experience in optical network engineering or DWDM operations. Essential knowledge includes DWDM technology fundamentals, fiber optic principles, optical test and measurement, scripting languages like Python, IP networking, and experience in a Linux/Unix environment. You must be able to read, modify, and extend existing code.
