Job description

AWS Infrastructure Services is seeking a skilled Network Engineer to join our Capacity Restoration Team. This role is crucial for maintaining the global infrastructure that powers AWS, ensuring continuous innovation and accessibility for our customers. You will be part of a dynamic, diverse team focused on solving complex infrastructure challenges, from servers and storage to networking and power.

We offer an inclusive culture that values bold ideas and empowers ownership. As a Network Engineer, you will bring expertise and autonomy to end-to-end capacity restoration for your assigned network segments. Your responsibilities will include leading complex troubleshooting efforts across various failure domains, mentoring fellow engineers, enhancing operational processes, and collaborating with engineering teams to strengthen systemic resilience. You'll apply cutting-edge technologies and best practices to solve challenging problems, influencing the entire team's scope.

Responsibilities

As a Network Engineer on the Capacity Restoration Team, you will:

- Oversee capacity restoration outcomes for designated network segments, focusing on reducing time-to-restore (TTR) and eliminating backlogs. - Lead intricate, multi-party troubleshooting sessions to resolve link and device failures involving carriers, colocation facilities, and internal teams. - Actively participate in critical incident "war rooms" that impact container or region Service Level Agreements (SLAs). - Contribute to on-call rotations to provide follow-the-sun coverage.

Process and Operations Improvement: - Develop and refine operational processes and runbooks for restoration workflows. - Analyze restoration metrics, such as TTR, backlog depth, and network health score impact, to identify trends and implement enhancements. - Ensure vendor accountability for restoration delays related to carriers and colocation.

Cross-Team Collaboration: - Partner with Topology Engineering, Capacity Engineering, and fabric engineering teams to address systemic issues. - Represent the Capacity Restoration Team in cross-organizational reviews and operational planning sessions.

Mentorship and Development: - Mentor and develop Network Engineers by providing technical guidance and conducting reviews. - Participate in hiring processes and technical assessments.

Qualifications

To excel in this role, you should possess:

- Proven experience driving improvement programs within operations, engineering, or support environments. - Hands-on experience working within a Linux/Unix operating system. - A Bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, electrical engineering, or a related technical field. - A minimum of 5 years of computer networking experience. - Demonstrated experience in troubleshooting and debugging complex technical systems, or in managing and troubleshooting networks. - Proficiency with BGP, OSPF, or IS-IS protocols in large-scale network environments.

Preferred qualifications include experience managing critical operational processes with SLA responsibility, mentoring the engineering community, and 1+ years of experience with fiber optics or copper cabling standards and troubleshooting. Familiarity with network performance analysis and carrier coordination is also highly valued. We encourage candidates with diverse backgrounds and non-traditional career paths to apply.
