Join AWS Infrastructure Services, the team responsible for the global cloud infrastructure. We are seeking a Network Development Engineer for our Capacity Restoration Team to build and enhance solutions that accelerate network capacity restoration. This role offers the opportunity to work on challenging problems, collaborate with diverse engineering teams, and contribute to the lowest possible cost and highest standards of safety and security for our customers.
This is an opportunity to step beyond traditional approaches and develop innovative solutions. You will focus on the component level of our automation and tooling, creating and improving tools to speed up the restoration of network capacity. You'll tackle technical challenges, guided by experienced teammates, and learn the intricacies of our team's product architecture.
The position offers a unique blend of operations and engineering. You'll actively participate in network operations while also writing code to streamline these processes. Network Development Engineers on the Capacity Restoration Team are empowered to design and implement their own solutions without vendor reliance for design or support.
Key responsibilities include developing and refining automation components to expedite link and device restoration across various network fabrics. You will troubleshoot network failures at a granular level, leveraging tools like workflow orchestration engines and deployment automation. Developing link test plans and structured diagnostic outputs for system-guided troubleshooting is also crucial.
Further duties involve extending existing tooling to enhance monitoring and alerting for out-of-service capacity. Creating and maintaining team-level operational metrics, monitors, and processes tied to key performance indicators such as MTTR and restoration success rate is expected. You will write clean, testable code, preferably in Python, with comprehensive documentation to benefit future engineers.
Contributing to design reviews and operational improvement discussions is part of the role, as is participating in on-call rotations for follow-the-sun coverage across Seattle and Bangalore. Maintaining clear and up-to-date documentation for systems and runbooks is essential. You will actively learn and apply team product architecture knowledge to deliver functional solutions.
Basic qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering, or at least 3 years of verification experience in communication systems. A minimum of 1 year of computer networking experience or experience with network equipment installation and configuration is required.
Proficiency in at least one scripting language such as Python, Ruby, or Perl is necessary. Candidates should have experience with IP networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP, UDP, DNS, and DHCP, as well as major internet routing protocols like BGP and OSPF. Experience in a Linux or Unix environment is also a prerequisite.
Preferred qualifications encompass experience with automation and version control tools, or networking administration and troubleshooting in Linux environments. Experience in large-scale networking is beneficial, as is exposure to Amazon's internal tooling. Familiarity with configuration management, deployment automation, and workflow orchestration tools is advantageous. Knowledge of BGP or OSPF in production environments and certifications like CCNA or JNCIA are considered a plus.
