We are seeking a highly motivated and proactive individual to establish and lead our in-house legal function. This pivotal role offers immense ownership, allowing you to shape Emergent's legal strategy and operations from the ground up. You will collaborate closely with founders and leadership, ensuring legal frameworks support rapid business growth and responsible scaling.

As our first in-house Legal Counsel, you will be the primary legal advisor for Emergent, managing a diverse range of areas including commercial contracts, corporate governance, data privacy, intellectual property, and regulatory compliance for our India and US entities.

Key responsibilities include: - Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating various commercial agreements such as customer contracts, MSAs, vendor agreements, and NDAs. - Ensuring comprehensive data privacy and protection compliance, adhering to regulations like India's DPDP Act and GDPR. - Developing and advising on intellectual property strategy, covering trademarks, copyrights, and proprietary technology protection. - Supporting crucial corporate matters, including fundraising, board governance, and entity structuring. - Providing legal guidance to product and engineering teams on AI, user data, and terms of service. - Creating scalable legal templates, playbooks, and processes to optimize deal cycles. - Managing external counsel relationships to ensure quality and cost-effectiveness. - Monitoring and interpreting evolving AI, technology, and employment regulations for practical business application.

We are looking for a seasoned legal professional with 6 to 10 years of experience, possessing a strong foundation in commercial and technology law. A qualified lawyer with an LLB and enrollment with the Bar Council of India is essential.

Ideal candidates will have: - In-house experience at a technology or SaaS company, or significant experience at a top-tier law firm serving tech clients. - Expertise in commercial contracting, data privacy, and intellectual property law. - The ability to thrive in ambiguous environments, prioritize effectively, and deliver clear, actionable advice under pressure. - Excellent communication skills and sound judgment for balancing pragmatism with firm advocacy. - A proactive, ownership-driven mindset with a strong bias for action.

Valuable additional experience includes exposure to US commercial law, cross-border transactions, AI/data-focused products, fundraising, and building legal functions at early-stage companies.
