Join Optum, a global leader in health technology, and contribute to improving health outcomes for millions. We are seeking a Lead Software Engineer to drive technical direction for our React front-end and Python services. This role offers a unique opportunity to shape engineering standards, mentor a talented team, and play a pivotal role in scaling our innovative platforms, Horizon Compass and Apollo, across new regions.
This position is instrumental in advancing health optimization globally within a culture that values inclusion, collaboration, and continuous growth. You will be part of a dynamic team dedicated to delivering impactful solutions.
As the Lead Software Engineer, you will own critical architectural decisions for the Horizon Compass front-end (React) and the Python services layer that interfaces with our data platform (Databricks/Snowflake).
You will establish and enforce high engineering standards, including code review best practices, testing discipline, and CI/CD pipelines. Leading the technical design for new portal features and data services will be key, ensuring a balance between rapid development and data governance requirements.
Further responsibilities include mentoring and developing engineers on the team, serving as the primary technical escalation point, and partnering closely with leadership on technical roadmaps and resource allocation. You will also guide the separation of front-end and back-end tasks and de-risk the expansion of Horizon/Apollo to additional regions.
We are looking for a candidate with graduate-level education or equivalent practical experience, demonstrating strong technical depth. Expertise in React architecture, performance, and state management, alongside advanced Python skills for API development and service design, is essential.
A solid understanding of SQL and experience with modern data platforms like Databricks or Snowflake are required. Proven ability to design scalable systems and evolve platform architecture is crucial.
Leadership experience as a technical lead, including setting standards, conducting design reviews, and unblocking engineers, is expected. The ideal candidate can mentor effectively without micromanaging and confidently represent technical insights to non-engineering stakeholders and leadership. Experience in regulated environments, particularly healthcare, and pragmatic judgment regarding technical debt are highly valued.
