As a Lead Software Engineer, you will be a hands-on technical leader, deeply involved in designing, developing, and scaling high-quality software. You will collaborate closely with product, architecture, security, and platform teams to build resilient, secure, and high-performing systems that adhere to Mastercard's rigorous engineering standards and guild practices.

This role involves developing and enhancing software through programming, unit testing, implementation, and documentation. You will be responsible for researching and proposing alternative technical solutions to meet evolving business needs, ensuring adherence to Mastercard's standards, processes, and best practices.

Key duties include developing secure, scalable software solutions within specified timelines and budgets. You will create comprehensive systems and testing documentation, following established Quality Assurance and Quality Control processes. Actively identifying opportunities for process improvement and enhancing existing standards is also a core aspect of this position.

You will write thorough unit, integration, and contract tests to ensure high code coverage and system reliability. Participating in code reviews, offering constructive feedback, and upholding engineering excellence are vital. Collaborating with architects to translate solution designs into functional software and partnering effectively with Product Owners, Scrum Masters, QA, and cross-functional teams in an Agile setting are expected.

Further responsibilities include mentoring junior engineers, fostering knowledge sharing within the Java/Backend Engineering Guild, and driving technical decisions aligned with Mastercard's reference architectures. You will participate in on-call rotations and production support, taking ownership of root cause analysis and continuous improvement initiatives. Promoting Mastercard's core values of inclusion, accountability, and continuous learning is also integral to this role.

The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or an equivalent educational background. A strong understanding of Software Engineering Concepts and Methodologies is essential. Experience in building microservices-based architectures is a prerequisite, along with a minimum of 5 years of experience in software engineering.

We require strong proficiency in Java, Spring Boot, RESTful APIs, and backend development. Knowledge of and hands-on experience with AI Agents is a must. Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to independently tackle complex challenges are critical.

Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments is highly desirable. Candidates should be energetic, detail-oriented, proactive, and capable of performing under pressure to meet tight deadlines. Strong verbal and written communication skills are necessary, as is the ability to quickly learn and implement new technologies, frameworks, and tools.
