Job description

Mastercard is at the forefront of powering economies and empowering individuals across over 200 countries. We are dedicated to building a sustainable economy where everyone can thrive, offering a wide array of secure, simple, smart, and accessible digital payment solutions. Our innovative technology, strategic partnerships, and extensive networks combine to deliver unique products and services, enabling people, businesses, and governments to reach their full potential.

We foster an inclusive culture that celebrates diversity, respects individual strengths, and values unique experiences. This environment allows us to make better decisions, drive innovation, and achieve superior business results, embodying our 'Decency Quotient' in all our endeavors.

Responsibilities

As a Lead Software Engineer, you will be instrumental in designing and coding diverse applications, including transaction processing, analytics, user interfaces, and APIs, leveraging cutting-edge technologies in big data, distributed systems, and machine learning.

You will own complex, cross-service problems, facilitating collaboration among cross-functional teams to drive resolutions. Your role involves making critical prioritization decisions and trade-offs with product partners, automating and simplifying all facets of software delivery, and introducing new technologies and architectures in alignment with enterprise guidelines. Additionally, you will provide expert development and architecture guidance to team members.

Qualifications

We are seeking an engineer with demonstrable expertise in secure coding practices and hands-on experience with Java and Spring. Proficiency in AI-based development tools like GitHub Copilot and Claude code, along with experience in messaging systems such as Kafka and event-driven architectures, is essential.

Familiarity with secure coding standards (OWASP, CWE, SEI CERT) and vulnerability management is required. You should possess a strong understanding of Application Programming Interface (API) standards, cataloging, and effort estimation. The ability to elaborate and estimate non-functional requirements, including security, regulatory compliance, and performance metrics, is crucial.

Experience with diverse application patterns (APIs, event-driven services, batch services, web applications, big data), debugging complex issues in multi-tier distributed systems, and driving operational excellence through testing and production metrics analysis are key. We value strong leadership, mentoring capabilities, and the ability to build consensus across organizational boundaries, acting as a key technical voice in evangelizing solutions and anticipating industry trends.
