Mastercard is a global technology company that drives economies and empowers individuals across 200+ countries. We are dedicated to fostering an inclusive, digital economy that benefits everyone by making transactions secure, simple, smart, and accessible. Our core values, rooted in our Decency Quotient (DQ), guide our product development, collaboration, and positive societal impact.
Technology is integral to Mastercard's mission. The solutions we build today will shape the future of global commerce, enhancing its connectivity, inclusivity, security, and resilience. We operate at a massive global scale and seek leaders who excel in complex environments, are committed to engineering excellence, and can translate business needs into robust, high-quality platforms and user experiences.
This role offers technical leadership and hands-on delivery for modern, scalable, and secure web platforms. Key responsibilities include owning the architecture, employing deep engineering expertise, and providing people leadership. You will collaborate closely with Product, UX, Data/Analytics, and DevOps/SRE teams to develop impactful applications. This involves mentoring engineers, establishing engineering standards, and promoting best practices across the full stack.
Responsibilities encompass leading end-to-end solution design, architecture, and implementation of web applications and platform services using Java (Spring Boot) and/or Python (Django/Django REST Framework), alongside modern front-end frameworks like React, Next.js, and TypeScript. You will define system boundaries, API contracts, data models, and non-functional requirements for availability, latency, scalability, resilience, and security. Furthermore, you will establish and enforce engineering standards for code quality, branching, reviews, documentation, observability, and secure coding.
Delivery involves designing, building, and maintaining high-quality backend services for authentication, authorization, business logic, data access, and third-party integrations. Front-end development includes creating responsive, high-performance applications with React/Next.js, modern UI patterns, state management (Redux), and component-driven development. Integration of RESTful APIs will ensure proper versioning, backward compatibility, and robust error handling.
Focusing on performance, reliability, and security, you will drive optimization through profiling, caching, database query tuning, and efficient rendering. Secure by design principles, including input validation, dependency hygiene, and threat-aware development, will be applied. Building and operating production-grade observability with logging, metrics, tracing, alerting, and runbooks will enhance system reliability and reduce Mean Time To Recovery (MTTR).
DevOps and Cloud Enablement includes driving CI/CD automation with Git, Jenkins, and containerized workloads using Docker and Kubernetes. Support for cloud-native deployments on Azure and/or AWS will cover environment configuration, release governance, and operational readiness. Quality Engineering and Accessibility involve ensuring strong automated testing practices, including unit and integration tests, with shift-left quality and automated quality gates. Championing accessibility and responsive design, ensuring WCAG 2.1 compliance, is also crucial.
People Leadership and Collaboration involve mentoring and coaching engineers through design and code reviews, pairing, and growth plans. Partnering with Product, UX, and DevOps/SRE stakeholders to influence roadmaps, plan releases, and manage trade-offs is essential. Effective communication with leadership regarding progress, risks, technical debt, and investment needs is also required.
To excel in this role, you need a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience, along with 8+ years of professional software engineering experience with full stack delivery ownership. A minimum of 2 years in a technical leadership role, including mentoring engineers and driving engineering standards, is required.
Essential technical proficiencies include expertise in Java and Spring Boot, with good-to-have skills in Python, Django, and Django REST Framework. Strong RESTful API design, proficiency in SQL and Relational Databases are fundamental. For front-end development, advanced skills in React.js/Next.js and strong abilities in Redux, JavaScript, TypeScript, HTML, and CSS are expected.
DevOps and platform skills include expert-level Git and Version Control, strong experience with Docker, Kubernetes, Jenkins (CI/CD), Azure, and AWS. Proficient unit testing and debugging skills are necessary, along with proven experience building accessible applications adhering to WCAG 2.1 standards.
We are also looking for experience with AI for faster, high-quality web platform delivery. This includes AI-assisted coding for feature acceleration, AI-assisted test creation for improved coverage, AI-driven quality checks for PR reviews and CI gates, and performance optimisation support using AI insights.
Preferred qualifications include experience with microservices architectures, API governance, schema and versioning strategies, and event-driven systems. Hands-on exposure to security engineering practices like OWASP principles and dependency management is beneficial. Experience implementing observability and operating production systems at scale, along with prior experience in payments, financial services, or other highly regulated domains, are also advantageous.
