Job description

Oracle is building a new Systems Firmware team in Bengaluru, seeking an Engineering Director to lead its establishment. This pivotal role involves recruiting the founding engineers, defining the team's technical direction and culture, and driving outcomes critical to the reliability and serviceability of our server fleet.

The team's initial focus will be on resolving production issues within BMC and BIOS firmware. Collaborating closely with US engineering, operations, and hardware teams, you will spearhead complex investigations, implement lasting solutions, and enhance diagnostics and release processes to prevent future problems. The team will also contribute to on-call rotations during Indian business hours, ensuring a coordinated response and seamless technical handoffs with US counterparts.

You will begin by leading a team of four senior engineers, providing close technical guidance while cultivating the necessary practices and partnerships for success. Key responsibilities include setting priorities, fostering engineer development, and balancing immediate fleet needs with long-term improvements in firmware quality, security, and operational efficiency.

Furthermore, you will shape the team's roadmap and future capabilities. As hiring expands, the team will move into firmware development and delivery for new server and GPU platforms, engaging with Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs) and Joint Design Manufacturers (JDMs), particularly those based in Taiwan, for platform requirements, firmware integration, bring-up, validation, and production readiness.

Responsibilities

- Build and lead the Bangalore Systems Firmware team, focusing on recruitment, development, and retention of exceptional engineers. - Own firmware operational support during India daytime hours, establishing sustainable on-call rotations and effective handoffs. - Lead the resolution of complex firmware issues, guiding incident triage, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis. - Translate fleet experience into product improvements by partnering with engineering, operations, and vendors. - Establish and evolve engineering and operational standards, including runbooks, escalation processes, and validation practices. - Drive disciplined execution by setting priorities, managing dependencies, and balancing urgent needs with long-term improvements. - Champion firmware quality and security through secure development practices and robust testing. - Develop strong global partnerships with US and India engineering teams, fleet operations, hardware, and external vendors. - Expand the team's product development capabilities for new server and GPU platforms. - Drive continuous improvement by evaluating new technologies and investing in automation and knowledge sharing.

Qualifications

- Proven success in leading systems firmware engineering teams, including hiring, coaching, and performance management. - Deep technical expertise in server firmware, specifically BMC and/or BIOS/UEFI, with the ability to guide engineering decisions. - Experience supporting production server environments and resolving complex issues across firmware, hardware, and software. - Strong technical judgment for guiding architecture reviews and connecting corrective actions to long-term reliability. - Experience establishing operational support practices, including on-call, incident escalation, and cross-team coordination. - Track record of delivering complex engineering initiatives through clear priorities and effective execution. - Proficiency in applying secure development practices, firmware validation, and release management. - Excellent communication and partnership skills for aligning teams and stakeholders. - A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
