Google is seeking a Data Center Technician to join the Hardware Operations team, responsible for the physical infrastructure powering its search technology. This role involves installing, configuring, testing, troubleshooting, and maintaining hardware like servers and server software, including Google's Linux cluster.
You will also manage the configuration of complex network components such as routers, hubs, bridges, switches, and networking protocols. Participation in or leadership of small project teams for larger installations and developing project contingency plans are key aspects of this position.
This role requires physical dexterity for manual movement and installation of racks. Install, configure, test, troubleshoot, and maintain hardware, including servers and their components, along with server software like Google's Linux cluster.
Manage the configuration of complex network components, such as routers, hubs, bridges, switches, and networking protocols.
Participate in or lead small project teams on larger installations and develop project contingency plans.
Deploy and operate new data center infrastructure across various projects and teams.
Report issues and follow data center procedures to troubleshoot and diagnose moderately complex issues with equipment or infrastructure.
Diagnose, repair, and perform preventative maintenance on equipment, servers, machines, and infrastructure independently.
Execute advanced operational procedures and follow security policies and processes.
Work in shifts to meet evolving business needs and operational schedules.
A strong foundation in assembling mechanical or electrical systems, or performing component-level repairs and troubleshooting on technical equipment is essential.
Proficiency in diagnosing and troubleshooting operating systems, computer hardware, and server hardware is required.
Familiarity with networking protocols is necessary for this role.
Candidates must be able to lift/move 50lb (23kg) of equipment and sustain physical exertion over extended periods, including frequent bending, kneeling, climbing, pushing/pulling, and lifting.
Flexibility to work non-standard hours, including weekends, night shifts, holidays, and on shift-based schedules, is mandatory.
