Join our team as a Custom Software Engineer and play a pivotal role in developing innovative software solutions. You'll leverage modern frameworks and agile methodologies to design, code, and enhance system components, delivering scalable and high-performing applications that precisely meet business objectives. This role offers the opportunity to own the technical direction of critical applications and drive the delivery of new features within an engineering team.

Your contributions will involve developing and operating both the TEM application and its associated Data Product. A key aspect of this role is the close collaboration with product management and business analysts to translate requirements into effective technical solutions. You will also be responsible for developing and operating infrastructure on a provided cloud platform, ensuring the quality and efficiency of delivered code and end-to-end data processing, and championing test automation.

Take full technical ownership of the TEM (Transport Emission Measurement) application and its new feature deliveries. Lead within the TEM engineering team, driving development and operational excellence. Develop and maintain the TEM Data Product, ensuring its reliability and performance. Collaborate effectively with product management and business analysts to align technical execution with business needs. Develop and operate infrastructure on the cloud platform (AWS), ensuring scalability and security. Ensure high quality for all delivered code and end-to-end data processing pipelines. Contribute significantly to test automation strategies and increasing test coverage.

Possess 5+ years of combined experience in data engineering, backend development, and cloud platform work. Proficiency in Java (version 11+, ideally 21) and the Spring framework, with experience in Maven build tooling and Docker packaging. Experience with Kafka, Confluent Schema Registry, and Kafka Connect is essential. Skilled in Python scripting for automation, Lambda helpers, and data tooling (Python 3.11 preferred). Hands-on experience with Terraform (v1.4.x compatible) and AWS core infrastructure services (ECS, ECR, Lambda, SQS, SecretsManager, Aurora, ElastiCache, Route53, KMS, cross-account roles, EKS). Strong SQL skills, including complex queries, window functions, performance tuning, and data modeling, with experience in Snowflake. Practical experience with DB migration tooling like Flyway and SQL CI/CD pipelines via GitLab CI. Familiarity with CI/CD and container workflows (GitLab CI, Docker) and secrets handling using SOPS/CodeArtifact. Comfortable with observability concepts including structured logging, metrics, and distributed tracing for troubleshooting in distributed systems. Pragmatic and security-aware, with the ability to operate across data, backend, and infrastructure domains. Excellent collaboration and documentation skills, with the ability to translate business requirements into data and service contracts. A test-driven mindset for code and data, including experience with reproducible validation queries and automation.
