As a Custom Software Engineer, you will design, code, and enhance system components to build scalable, high-performing custom software solutions. This role emphasizes modern frameworks and agile practices to meet specific business needs.

You will focus on developing AI-native, HANA-optimized SAP applications and extensions. This involves combining deep ABAP on HANA engineering with agentic AI patterns, including LLMs, tools, retrieval, and evaluation. The goal is to deliver production-grade solutions using HANA pushdown principles and modern ABAP capabilities, enabling reasoned actions within enterprise SAP workflows without the need to train foundation models from scratch.

Design and develop ABAP solutions optimized for SAP HANA, leveraging pushdown principles to maximize in-database processing and minimize data movement. Build efficient data models using CDS views, associations, and annotations, implementing performance-critical logic with AMDP/SQLScript where necessary.

Develop modular, testable, and maintainable ABAP code adhering to clean architecture and enterprise SDLC. Build stable, versioned services and APIs using modern paradigms like OData, ensuring secure coding standards and consistent authorization checks.

Model enterprise business entities using CDS semantics for transactional and analytical consumption, creating reusable data artifacts. Ensure lineage-friendly structures and consistent business definitions.

Build AI-enabled SAP experiences integrating ABAP services with LLM capabilities, such as tool calling, retrieval-grounded outputs (RAG), and deterministic fallbacks. Implement prompts, tool schemas, and context assembly strategies to reduce hallucinations and enforce safety boundaries.

Develop automated tests for ABAP services and data artifacts, establishing evaluation harnesses for AI behaviors. Introduce guardrails for AI outputs, including authorization-aware filtering, redaction rules, and audit logs.

Instrument services with logs, metrics, and traces for production support. Design robust error handling for enterprise flows and support incident response.

Integrate ABAP on HANA services with SAP and non-SAP ecosystems. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure end-to-end solution correctness and performance. Rapidly prototype and evolve solutions into scalable production systems.

A strong foundation in ABAP Development on HANA is essential, including performance tuning, pushdown techniques, and efficient SQL access patterns. Proficiency with CDS views and modern data modeling practices is required.

Experience with AMDP/SQLScript for performance-critical scenarios and controlled code pushdown is necessary. You should possess solid software engineering discipline, including clean design, a testing mindset, CI/CD orientation, and a focus on production readiness.

Demonstrated ability in AI-native development is crucial, encompassing LLM integration, retrieval grounding, tool orchestration, evaluation loops, and establishing safety boundaries. Skills in OData/service design patterns, API lifecycle management, and contract-first development are strongly beneficial.

Familiarity with integrating SAP backends with cloud runtimes and enterprise integration platforms is advantageous. Knowledge of SAP security/authorizations and compliance requirements for sensitive enterprise data is also valued.
