We are seeking a Custom Software Engineer with a focus on building AI-native, HANA-optimized SAP applications and extensions. This role combines deep ABAP on HANA engineering expertise with modern agentic AI patterns, including Large Language Models (LLMs), tools, retrieval, and evaluation.

The position emphasizes delivering high-performance, cloud-ready, production-grade solutions. You will leverage HANA pushdown principles, contemporary ABAP development, and governed AI capabilities to create systems that can reason, retrieve context, and assist or act within enterprise SAP workflows, all without the need for training foundation models from scratch.

As a Custom Software Engineer, you will be instrumental in designing and developing SAP ABAP solutions optimized for SAP HANA, utilizing pushdown principles to maximize in-database processing. You will build efficient data models and access patterns with CDS views, associations, and annotations, implementing performance-critical logic using AMDP/SQLScript where appropriate.

Responsibilities also include developing modular, testable, and maintainable ABAP code aligned with clean architecture practices, and building services and APIs using modern paradigms like OData. You will apply secure coding standards and authorization checks consistently, model enterprise business entities using CDS semantics for transactional and analytical consumption, and design reusable data artifacts.

Furthermore, you will build AI-enabled SAP experiences integrating ABAP services with LLM capabilities, including tool calling orchestration, retrieval-grounded outputs, and deterministic fallbacks. This involves implementing prompts/templates, tool schemas, and context assembly strategies to reduce hallucinations and enforce enterprise safety boundaries. You will also build automated tests for ABAP services and data artifacts, establish evaluation harnesses for AI behaviors, and introduce guardrails for AI outputs.

Additionally, you will instrument services with logs, metrics, and traces for production support, design robust error handling for enterprise flows, and support incident response with runbooks. Integration with SAP and non-SAP ecosystems, collaboration with cross-functional teams, and rapid prototyping to evolve solutions into scalable production systems are also key aspects of this role.

A strong foundation in ABAP Development on HANA, including performance tuning, pushdown techniques, and efficient SQL access patterns, is essential. Proficiency with CDS views and modern data modeling practices such as associations, annotations, and authorization concepts is required.

Candidates must have experience with AMDP/SQLScript for performance-critical scenarios and controlled code pushdown. A solid software engineering discipline is expected, encompassing clean design, a testing mindset, CI/CD orientation, and a focus on production readiness. Experience in building AI-native capabilities, including LLM integration, retrieval grounding, tool orchestration, evaluation loops, and safety boundaries, is also a must-have.

Beneficial skills include expertise in OData/service design patterns, API lifecycle management, and contract-first development. Experience integrating SAP backends with cloud runtimes and enterprise integration platforms is advantageous. Familiarity with performance benchmarking, load testing, query-plan driven tuning, and knowledge of SAP security/authorizations and compliance requirements for sensitive enterprise data will be highly valued.
