As a Custom Software Engineer, you will be instrumental in designing, coding, and enhancing components across complex systems and applications. Leveraging modern frameworks and agile practices, you will deliver scalable, high-performing solutions precisely tailored to specific business requirements. This role focuses on building AI-native, HANA-optimized SAP applications and extensions, blending deep ABAP on HANA engineering with advanced agentic AI patterns.

The position emphasizes delivering production-grade solutions that are cloud-ready and utilize HANA pushdown principles. You will work with modern ABAP and governed AI capabilities to create systems that can reason, retrieve context, and assist or act within enterprise SAP workflows, without the need for training foundation models from scratch.

You will architect and develop ABAP solutions that are heavily optimized for SAP HANA, prioritizing pushdown principles to minimize data movement and maximize in-database processing. This involves building efficient data models and access patterns using CDS views, associations, and annotations, and implementing performance-critical logic with AMDP/SQLScript when necessary.

Your role includes developing modular, testable, and maintainable ABAP code aligned with clean architecture practices and enterprise SDLC standards. You'll also build robust services and APIs using modern paradigms like OData, ensuring stability and contract-first behavior, while consistently applying secure coding standards and authorization checks.

Additionally, you will model enterprise business entities using CDS semantics for both transactional and analytical purposes, designing reusable data artifacts for various consumers. A key aspect is building AI-enabled SAP experiences by integrating ABAP services with LLM capabilities, focusing on tool calling orchestration, retrieval-grounded outputs, and deterministic fallbacks. Quality engineering through automated testing and establishing evaluation harnesses for AI behaviors are crucial, alongside ensuring observability, reliability, and operational support for the developed solutions.

A strong foundation in ABAP Development on HANA is essential, with hands-on expertise in performance tuning, pushdown techniques, and efficient SQL access patterns. Proficiency with CDS views and modern data modeling practices, including associations, annotations, and authorization concepts, is required.

Experience with AMDP/SQLScript for performance-critical scenarios and controlled code pushdown is necessary. You should demonstrate solid software engineering discipline, including clean design principles, a testing mindset, CI/CD orientation, and a focus on production readiness. The ability to build AI-native capabilities, such as LLM integration, retrieval grounding, tool orchestration, evaluation loops, and implementing safety boundaries, is also a core requirement.

Beneficial skills include experience with OData/service design patterns, API lifecycle management, and contract-first development. Familiarity with integrating SAP backends with cloud runtimes and enterprise integration platforms is advantageous, as is knowledge of SAP security, authorizations, and compliance requirements for sensitive enterprise data.
